Ghelinţa / Gelence / Gälänts

 

The church of Gelence is the most eastern Roman Catholic Church of the Carpathian basin. Its of 13th century origin, founded by the Cistercians and was rebuilt in Gothic style in the beginning of the 14th century. The nave and the arch are from the first, Romanesqe church. The Gothic sanctuary was rebuilt in the 15th century from the stones of the Romanesqe sanctuary, and was completed in 1503 as a sign shows on the Reinessance tabernacle. The church is fortified.

The ceiling of the nave was alwasy flat, the 103 painted wooden coffers were made in 1628. The choir and the pulpit are from 1766.

In the nave the frescos of the northern wall in two rows are from around 1330, showing the legend of Saint Ladislaus and the sufferings of Jesus Christ. On the southern wall scenes are shown of the life of Alexandrian Saint Catherine.
